Networking has become an increasingly important aspect of employees’ activities, and companies actively try to support the interconnectedness of their employees by various means. In my talk, I will discuss the emergence of social capital based on the positions individual employees occupy within the collaborative networks of their firms. Building on three empirical studies, I will discuss the advantages social capital may offer to employees while also highlighting the potential downsides of extensive social capital. Finally, I will provide directions for firms on how to adequately consider the effects of employees' network embeddedness.
