The period between the fifth and the twelfth centuries is generally considered a ‘dark age’ in the history of western science. The rapidly spreading monasteries became the new centres of learning, and the decidedly Christian character of intellectual endeavour clouded the minds of scholars and made real scientific progress impossible. But how, then, could these misguided monks so easily embrace complex Greek and Arabic science in the twelfth century after 600 years of ignorance? How did they do mathematics without Euclid, astronomy without Ptolemy? This talk will find answers to these questions.
