Literary texts often use the form of the list to depict economic concerns. In doing so, the texts draw on everyday practices of list-making, such as inventories, shopping lists, gift lists, and wish lists. Against the backdrop of such practical lists which manage our consumption and consumerism, I will focus on ‘economic’ lists in literary texts, in particular those that depict love as a quantifiable and manageable good that entangles the lovers in a web of (material) desires.
