There’s no planet B
Revolutionary discoveries in astronomy are showing that Earth is one of billions of planets, and that rocky, temperate planets are ubiquitous. So, could we move to and survive on any of them? What makes Earth our unique home? How does this astronomical and geological perspective inform global issues, and how can academics contribute to a flourishing future for humanity?
Dr Raphaëlle D. Haywood is a Senior Lecturer in Physics and Astronomy and Assistant Director of the Global Systems Institute at the University of Exeter. She currently holds an Ernest Rutherford Fellowship from the UK's Science and Technologies Facilities Council (STFC). She is an expert in detecting and characterising planets beyond our solar system, known as exoplanets. She teaches an undergraduate course on Physics of Climate Change and uses her astrophysics research to highlight that there is no planet "B".
