Prospective modelling in human-environment systems - How to sound the scenario trumpet
Systems involving a large number of human actors are unpredictable, which poses challenges to the prospective assessment of sustainable development strategies such as technological change and policy measures. In this lecture, I give an overview of the different scientific approaches to studying the future development of societies, highlight the system linkages that can be used to constrain the solution space, and discuss guidelines for scientifically credible scenario modelling for human-environment systems
