Disciplines such as history of science, philosophy of science, sociology of science, anthropology of science, science ethics, science policy, science communication and, last but not least, the sciences themselves have multiple answers to such questions. They reach their conclusions by employing different methodologies, producing different kinds of evidence, and by different styles of interpretation. Sometimes, these answers can be incompatible with or directly opposed to each other. However, I argue that taken together, these approaches are better equipped to tackle complex problems in and of the sciences. This is the underlying idea of the Upper Rhine Network’s research and teaching efforts in this field. As a first shared research project, we will investigate „Bad News From, About and For the Sciences“ - as a topic that can be approached from many different angles. I will illustrate my argument with my team's current research on genetic studies on Roma. Our upcoming publications contain bad news from, about and for science and pose challenges for science communication and science policy.
