   Josephus in the Jewish Antiquities introduces Jesus the Messiah into his history of the Jews, and appears to report events corresponding closely to those of the Gospels, including Jesus’s crucifixion on the orders of Pontius Pilate. A long standing dispute exists about the authenticity of this text. The present article offers a narratological analysis of the passage, comparing the styles of event reporting in the passage with the three other episodes in Josephus’s Pontius Pilate sequence. The study concludes that the uses of the Greek verb forms such as aorists and participles are distinct in the Jesus passage from those in the other Pilate episodes, and that these differences amount to a difference in genre. It is suggested that the Jesus passage is close in style and content to the creeds that were composed two to three centuries after Josephus.

    In the Platonic Alcibiades, Socrates raises two central philosophical questions: Who are we? and: How ought we to take care of ourselves? He answers these questions, I argue, in his famous comparison between eyes and souls. Both answers hinge upon dialectic: self-care functions through dialectic because we are communicating beings. I adduce arguments for this from the set-up and language of the comparison passage. Another important indication is that Socrates expressly refers back to an earlier, aborted attempt to describe who we are in terms of using discourse. Rather than recommending to Alcibiades a life of contemplation apart from interpersonal exchange, Socrates presents such exchange as central to our self-improvement and identity.

    Analyses of everyday interactions show that oral communication is not at all unstructured and ‘formless’; but rather solidified communication patterns exist in all speech and cultural communities and rely on interaction in the communication process. Such solidified samples are the guiding framework for both the production and reception of communicative acts, and in anthropological linguistics and the sociology of knowledge and language they are known as “genres” or “communicative genres” (Luckmann 1986). In this chapter, both the theoretical and methodological foundations and implications of the generic concept, as used in linguistics and sociology of knowledge, are outlined. Also, current areas of application are presented and methodological issues are raised.

    The empirical focus of this paper is on utterances that re-use syntactic structures from a preceding syntactic unit. Next utterances of this type are usually treated as (coordination) ellipsis. It is argued that from an on-line perspective on spoken syntax, they are better described as structural latency: A grammatical structure already established remains available and can therefore be made use of with one or more of its slots being filled by new material. A variety of cases of this particular kind of conversational symbiosis are discussed. It is argued that they should receive a common treatment. A number of features of the general host/guest relationship are discussed.

    Classical narratology is problematic when it comes to comprehensive narratological analyses of medieval narrative texts. After a brief discussion of these problems and challenges for medievalists I propose a new approach to medieval narrative, by the example of saints’ legends, from a narratological perspective. This new approach, pragma-narratology, combines theories taken from the linguistic branch of pragmatics, such as conversation analysis or deixis, with core aspects of narratology, including the narrator’s discourse and various kinds of perspective. Both narratological predecessors and pragmatics are introduced before pragma-narratology and its three areas, vocalisation, focalisation and localisation, are outlined in further detail. A sample analysis of the legend of St Mathias from the Scottish Legendary, a late fourteenth-century compilation of saints’ lives, concludes the article.

    In this study, a particular development in language behavior, the use of the -ed suffix from English in both participle and non-participle contexts, is investigated in the domain of the German hip hop community. This morphological-orthographic feature is analyzed from a linguistic and distributional standpoint in a 12.5 million word corpus of German hip hop discussion, revealing its patterns of use over a decade in both contexts within this community, along with supplemental examples from YouTube videos. This corpus analysis is paired with a case study of a discourse event between two forum participants negotiating the use of this form, revealing a surprising streak of linguistic conservatism in the German hip hop community as well as the contested nature of the form’s usage. The results of this study demonstrate the need for closer attention to morphological forms in sociolinguistic studies of computer-mediated communication, as such forms can reveal linguistic behavior that would not be evident in spoken language, but which are nevertheless contested and negotiated as linguistic features.     This paper examines the perceptions and experiences of poor people in Sapa, Vietnam, regarding tourism as a means of poverty alleviation. Participant observations and semi-structured interviews were conducted with local people and key informants. The paper indicates that local people perceive poverty as a lack of rice and/or income and attribute it to both internal and external causes. The local tourism sector has primarily benefited the non-poor and tour operators, resulting in conflicts of interest among community members. However, more local people consider tourism a contributor to poverty alleviation than those who do not. All interviewees wish to become homestay owners or tourist guides. The most important barrier to the former is the lack of capital, while foreign language proficiency is the main hindrance to the latter. It is concluded that while an appropriate approach is required to involve local people in tourism, alternative livelihoods other than tourism are also needed. The study suggests that poor people’s interpretation of poverty may be substantially different from that of academics and policy-makers. It argues that by valuing the perspectives of those experiencing poverty we can establish more meaningful approaches to alleviating poverty through tourism that are more likely to succeed.

    In this paper, we take a Construction Grammar approach to Du Bois’ concept of resonance activation. We suggest that the structural mapping relations between juxtaposed utterances in discourse, described in terms of diagraphs in dialogic syntax, can acquire the status of ad hoc constructions or locally entrenched form-meaning pairings within the boundaries of an ongoing conversation. We argue that the local emergence of these ad hoc constructions involves the same cognitive mechanism described for the abstraction of conventional grammatical constructions from usage patterns. Accordingly, we propose to broaden the scope of Construction Grammar to include not only symbolic units that are conventionalized in a larger speech community, but also a dimension of online syntax, i.e. the emergence of grammatical patterns at the micro-level of a single conversation. Drawing on dialogic data from political talk shows and parliamentary debates, we illustrate the spectrum of these ad hoc constructional routines and show their local productivity, which we take as an indication of their (micro-)entrenchment within a given conversation.

   The notion of pluricentric languages as introduced by Heinz Kloss and made popular by Michael Clyne and (for German) by Ulrich Ammon is usually defined with reference to the codified standard varieties of a language which are said to differ in the various states in which the language is used. According to this definition standard German doubtlessly is a pluricentric language. However, as shown in this paper, while the number of Teutonisms is huge, there are only comparatively few Austriacisms and Heleviticisms since most of the candidate features are also found in the southern part of Germany. This raises the interesting question of how Austrian and Swiss standard German become enregistered (Agha) as distinct varieties. The paper discusses several examples of how this is done.
