FRIAS Research Projects

1. A fight for literary dominance. Poetry, narrative fiction and the knowledge discourses 1850-1900

When scholars analyze the discursive relation between literature and science, especially from the Enlightenment onwards, they usually draw upon narrative texts. Poetry plays a marginal role in this field. Since the age of Romanticism, its character seems to be fixed as that of the “genre of subjectivity” (Hegel). This is the situation also in 19th-century France. Accordingly, it has been shown how novelists since Balzac construct their texts by systematic reference to scientific discourse. Around 1850, however, there emerges a lyric paradigm, the “Parnasse”, whose texts also claim to reflect reality in analogy to the sciences. The project examines how the “Parnassiens” therefore enter into a fight for literary dominance with the authors of Realism and Naturalism.

2. L’écrivain et la chose publique. Ideology in literature: Céline, Pierre Drieu La Rochelle, Montherlant and Malaparte

The works of authors like Louis-Ferdinand Céline and Pierre Drieu La Rochelle, but to a certain extent also Henry de Montherlant and Curzio Malaparte, pose the problem of an ideologically charged literature. Many have wondered if there can be fascist literature with aesthetic value. I would like to reformulate the question and ask what happens if an ideological programme is inserted into narrative structures – both in fictional and non-fictional genres –, and examine how it is thus affirmed, deconstructed or modified.
