Young Academy for Sustainability Research

(c) Paula Prekopova via

The Young Academy for Sustainability Research promotes scientific, interdisciplinary discourse among outstanding young scientists as well as initiatives at the interfaces between science and society in the field of sustainability. The Young Academy is supported by the Eva Mayr-Stihl Foundation and coordinated by FRIAS. The implementation will take place in close cooperation with the profile field “Environment and Sustainability” at the University of Freiburg.

Renowned German or international young researchers may be selected as members of the academy for a three-year period. Scientific exchange between academy members will be fostered at meetings held three times a year at FRIAS in Freiburg. They focus on current research projects, joint projects and publications by the members. Regular attendance at these meetings is essential.

Working formats

  • Interdisciplinary working groups
  • Four to twelve-week work sojourns for academy members at FRIAS
  • Two anchor fellowships: To support a continuous, content-related exchange of the Young Academy for Sustainability Research to the Faculty for Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Freiburg, these fellowships are advertised worldwide for two years each.

In its opening session, the plenary elects the spokesperson for the Young Academy for Sustainability Research.

The Young Academy Council is a supportive and counseling body that assists the Young Academy. The members of the council, who are each appointed for three years, provide the Young Academy with feedback and ideas and support the projects at the interfaces between science and politics, business and culture.
