The period between the fifth and the twelfth centuries is generally considered a ‘dark age’ in the history of western science. The rapidly spreading monasteries became the new centres of learning, and the decidedly Christian character of intellectual endeavour clouded the minds of scholars and made real scientific progress impossible. How did they do mathematics without Euclid, astronomy without Ptolemy? This talk will find answers to these questions.
