Rethinking Adaptation in the Age of Media Convergence

Rethinking Adaptation in the Age of Media Convergence
A FRIAS Junior Researcher Conference

Date: 7-9 November 2013

Recent years have seen the development of a convergence culture. It is defined by an overlapping (convergence) of the formerly separate areas of old and new media. This convergence environment offers new areas of participation. “Consumers” appropriate movies, novels or computer games, adapt them, and then share them online. This leads to new public spaces and creates new synergies between what have formerly been the separate categories of “producers” and “consumers.”

The new field of convergence culture thus poses a challenge for the young field of adaptation studies. Our conference aims to rethink the study of adaptations, its definitions and theories to include recent phenomena such as adaptations in fan culture, new narrative forms such as “transmedia storytelling” and the impact of “consumers” on the development and evolution of fictional products and franchises.
