Internationalisation of Higher Education and English: Language Policies and Practices in universities in ASEAN

The internationalisation of higher education in ASEAN has led to the adoption of internationalisation policies and practices that include efforts to attract international students, engage in inter-institutional partnerships, and offer courses using English as the medium of instruction. This research examines language polices and practices of leading universities in the different ASEAN countries and implications for language in education. It reviews papers and reports on language policies in ASEAN with a special focus on institutional language policies and practices. A survey of language policies and practices, adapting the survey done for LERU universities in Europe (Kortmann 2019), will be carried out with a selection of universities in ASEAN. While the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and its implications for future practices remain to be precisely determined, the study will confirm that there is a need for universities to implement, or look again, at their language policies with regard to the needs of local and international staff and students, and the role and use of English in ASEAN within multilingual contexts.
