Macroautophagy is regarded as an unspecific bulk degradation process. However, using cell culture experiments we could show that organelles are degraded in an ordered fashion during starvation-induced macroautophagy. Currently, we are investigating starvation-induced, tissue-specific degradation dynamics in mice. The goal is to understand tissue-specific responses to starvation and the influence of macroautophagy on respective protein dynamics.
