A Return to the Social? Methods and Meanings of the Social in the Aftermath of the Cultural Turn

A starting point of this workshop is the presumption that "the social," once the foundation of social history, lost its explanatory power in the aftermath of the "cultural turn." The workshop will question that presumption by exploring the reinvigoration and repositioning of the social that has occurred through the very cultural historical preoccupations that were thought to dismantle it. Specifically, we will explore the recasting of the social in recent scholarship on the histories of consumption and material/ visual culture, colonialism and empire, citizenship and migrations, hunger, labor and the body,  the senses and emotions, biopolitics and sexuality. Presentations will consider the temporalities and geographies of the social from its apparent emergence in the late eighteenth century through its twentieth-century transformations. The workshop will include conceptual discussion of the social in relationship to society, social body, social order and scientification.
