The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) is at the core of the institutional strategy “Windows for Research”, which carried the University of Freiburg to success in the Federal and State Governments' Excellence Initiative in 2007. As an integral part of the University of Freiburg, the research college brings together research areas with particularly prominent profiles at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität. It is split into four schools: the School of History, the School of Language & Literature, the School of Life Sciences – LifeNet and the School of Soft Matter Research.
FRIAS participates in European fellowship program “EURIAS”
As a member institute of the European Network of Institutes for Advanced Study (NetIAS) FRIAS is participating in a joint fellowship program called “EURIAS” (European Institutes for Advanced Study Fellowship Programme). The program is co-funded by the European Union.
300 years of probability theory: The Universities of Freiburg and Basel celebrate Jacob Bernoulli’s paper Ars Conjectandi
Mathematical formulae for phenomena dependent on chance form the topic of Ars Conjectandi, a paper published 300 years ago that is regarded as the seminal work of modern probability theory. To celebrate its anniversary, the international commemorative colloquium “Ars Conjectandi – A celebration of 300 years of stochastics” is being held at the Universities of Freiburg and Basel between 21st and 24th May 2013.

FRIAS scientists publish results on alterations of cell microenvironment in skin fragility disorders
Mutations in the collagen VII encoding gene COL7A1 cause epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a group of severe, cancer-prone skin fragility disorders. A research team led by the LifeNet scientists Leena Bruckner-Tuderman, Hauke Busch and Jörn Dengjel studied extracellular protein alterations caused through the loss of collagen VII.
Control of cellular recycling pathways
Together with researchers from the University of Rome/Italy and the Italian National Institute for Infectious Diseases scientists from the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) and the Center for Biological Systems Analysis (ZBSA) shed light onto the highly organized and complicated regulation of cellular turnover.
