FRIAS Research Project

The face of the Roman Catholic Church is changing due to globalization. When taking a closer look at the Catholic Church within the U.S., one is struck by the immense challenge of developing strategies of plurality. The Catholic Church is the largest denomination in the States and has always been challenged by the immigration of thousands. Until the middle of the 19th century, the influences were mainly European. Today, the percentage of Hispanic, Latino or Philipino immigrants is growing larger each year. The cultural heterogeneity, diverse traditions and differing catholic identities force the church into creating mechanisms for mediating between these cultural and identity clashes. One example for gathering such catholic ‘tribes’ are shared parishes. My project will be centred on shared parishes as multi-ethnical churches, with the question of whether shared parishes are a micro model of global Catholicism and if a learning process for the world church could be examined from these parishes.
