FRIAS NEWS 09 published

The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies has just published the 9th issue of FRIAS NEWS, entitled “CONTINUITY AND CHANGE”. In this issue we explain the new concept of FRIAS, present the two research foci of the academic year 2013/14 and introduce the new academic directors. In her welcoming address Minister of Education and Cultural Affairs Theresia Bauer explains the rationale behind the states decision to support the work at FRIAS in the forthcoming years. In the series "Portrait" two selected projects are examined in detail: first, the fellow group of mathematicians Stefan Kebekus (Freiburg), Carlo Gasbarri and Gianluca Pacienza (both Strasbourg), which is one of four cross-border fellowship groups, which are all supported jointly by FRIAS and the University of Strasbourg Institut d’Études Avancées (USIAS). Second, we present historian Mirna Zakić who is currently working at FRIAS on a Volkswagen / Mellon Fellowship. Her research project focuses on the history of "Volksdeutsche" (ethnic Germans) in the Banat. News and event announcements round up the issue.
