Dorothea Wagner elected as Chairwoman of the German Science Council

Dorothea Wagner, professor of informatics at the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) and member of the FRIAS Scientific Advisory Board, was elected to the office of chairwoman of the German Science Council. FRIAS cordially congratulates!

Since this weekend, the German Science Council has a new chairperson: Computer scientist Dorothea Wagner unanimously elected to one of the top offices in German science, as KIT and German Science Council declared. Professor Wagner replaces agronomist Martina Brockmeier, who presided the committee from 2017 onwards. The Science Council is considered one of the most influential science organizations in Germany and advises governments on a federal and state level in decisions on science policy.

Professor Wagner’s main focus is the theoretical foundation of algorithms and their application, for example in traffic situations or in visualizing network data. In 2019, she was awarded the Konrad Zuse medal by the Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI), which is the highest award of the German-speaking computer science community. Thus, she is ready for a task the German Science Council has to face in the next years: the digitization in Germany. A task force is now about to evaluate how well German scientists are prepared for challenges and trends in the areas of Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, and Cyber Security.
