Freiburg and Strasbourg join forces: joint research groups of FRIAS and USIAS

Four joint research groups have been selected for funding within the first joint fellowship programme of the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) and the University of Strasbourg Institute for Advanced Study (USIAS).

Four joint research groups have been selected for funding within the first joint fellowship programme of the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) and the University of Strasbourg Institute for Advanced Study (USIAS). Starting in October 2013, four groups from different disciplines (spanning Philology, Mathematics and Life Sciences) will conduct their research as joint fellows of FRIAS and USIAS. Each group comprises researchers from both universities and will be funded for a period of two years, in which they will have the opportunity to work on the projects proposed in their application.
The following four projects have been chosen through a highly competitive selection process based on their outstanding quality, each combining special expertise from Freiburg and Strasbourg in novel ways:

  • Prof. Dr Ralf Reski, Professor for Plant Biotechnology, University of Freiburg, and Dr Danièle Werck-Reichhart, CNRS Research Director at the Institute of Plant Molecular Biology (IBMP), Strasbourg: “METABEVO. Evolution of the plant phenolic metabolism: a search for new strategies to improve biofuel production”
  • Dr Mei Li, CNRS Research Director at the Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology (IGBMC), Strasbourg, and Dr Jianying Yang, Department of Molecular Immunology, Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics (MPI-IE), University of Freiburg: “In vivo visualizing the dynamics of cytokine-targeting cells”
  • Prof. Dr Joachim Grage, Professor for Nordic Philology, University of Freiburg, and Dr Thomas Mohnike, Director of the Department of Scandinavian Studies, University of Strasbourg: “Building the North with words. Geographies of scientific knowledge in European philologies 1850–1950”
  • Prof. Dr Carlo Gasbarri, Professor of Mathematics, University of Strasbourg; Prof. Dr Stefan Kebekus, Professor of Mathematics, University of Freiburg, and Dr Gianluca Pacienza, Associate Professor of Mathematics, University of Strasbourg: “Rational Points, Rational Curves and Automorphisms of Special Varieties”

The FRIAS-USIAS joint call was launched in February 2013 in order to support collaboration between researchers of the two universities and to enable highly original joint research projects in which the strengths of the two universities are optimally combined. It is based on a memorandum of understanding between the University of Freiburg and the University of Strasbourg. The high quality of the unexpectedly large number of applications gives a clear indication of the great potential of pooling research expertise from both universities, and of the  benefits of continued support for cross-border-collaborations, possibly including the university of Basel in the near future.
