In past decades the concept of recognition has moved to the center of social theory. To what extent can the concept be useful for literary and cultural studies? In my project I argue that current social theories of recognition are in need of finding more convincing answers to the role culture plays in struggles for recognition, just as, on the other hand, the concept of recognition can be of great explanatory value for literary and cultural studies.
