Prof. Dr. Shruti Tambe, Department of Sociology, Centre for Advanced Studies, Savitribai Phule Pune University

In a society where poverty and gender subordination is taken for granted, reproductive health issues of young mothers are seen in the larger context of inequality and exclusion. Issues of access to services provided by the government are considered as related to policies and mechanisms. And issues of quality are seen as linked with underdevelopment of the country and ignorance.

Our study points out that current situation regarding issues of access and quality are related to a complex combination of macro and micro factors. Macro factors include systemic issues like democratization, poor governance, poverty and micro factors include particular forms of intersectionality, regional and local factors shaping cultural practices.

This lecture will be based on research in progress and it also includes close observation of work by activists to improve the situation.
