Robinson Crusoe is one of a select number of literary characters who have become modern myths. Like the tales of Don Quixote, Frankenstein's monster, or Sherlock Holmes, the story of a man alone on a desert island is endlessly imitated, adapted, and retold. To explain the enduring power of this figure, we will explore the structure of Daniel Defoe's original novel of 1719, and what it tells us not only about survival after shipwreck but about capitalism, global trade, and modern banking.
