The presentation introduces into a book project currently pursued by Marcus Mietzner (Australian National University) and Jürgen Rüland (University of Freiburg). The book concludes six years of democratization research under the aegis of the University of Freiburg’s Southeast Asian Studies Program. It seeks to explore as to what extent Indonesia’s democratization process that began with the collapse of President Suharto’s New Order regime in 1998, has been informed by Western models of liberal democracy and how much Indonesian elites have localized the concomitant external normative challenges. It raises the question as to what extent Indonesian organicist and collectivist concepts of political and social order have survived regime change and fused with new political ideas. The book is based on norm diffusion theory and explores processes of norm diffusion including the pertinent alignments and de-alignments of social forces in several major policy fields. Among the policy fields studied in-depth is the democratization of regional governance, security sector reform, the electoral system, the political party system, legislative politics and decentralization.
