There has been a great deal of speculation about the role of 'quantum coherences' in controlling the efficiency of light harvesting. What has been lacking so far is a way to test these ideas experimentally. This talk will discuss how to approach this problem with reference to the LH complexes from purple photosynthetic bacteria. The kinds of changes to this system that can be achieved will be described with the hope that theory can be developed to predict how these changes could modulate coherences and by inference affect the efficiency of energy transfer.
