Booklaunch by Kate Rigby, commentary by Franz-Josef Brüggemeier:

“Crossing the disciplinary divide to bridge the sustainability gap”

In order to reduce the “the growing ‘sustainability gap’ between what we know needs to be done and what is actually being done’” (Fischer et al. “Mind the sustainability gap.” Trends in Ecology and Evolution, 22.12, 2007), new modes of research are required that cross the disciplinary divide between the natural sciences and the humanities and social sciences. Dancing with Disaster attempts this difficult crossing with respect to the sustainability challenge of climate change mitigation and adaptation by exploring environmental histories and literary representations of past 'natural' disasters, real and imagined. These histories and narratives disclose the complex entanglement of socio-cultural and bio-physical processes and agencies in such calamitous occurrences, as well as raising questions about human ethical responsibility towards others (human and nonhuman) in reducing vulnerability, saving lives, and assisting recovery.

"Dancing with Disaster operates within what is [...] the most productive vein of contemporary environmental-theoretical thought and mines that vein significantly further in both theoretical and practical ways."

— Frederick Buell, CUNY Queens, author of From Apocalypse to Way of Life: Environmental Crisis in the American Century
