Prof. Dr. Jürgen Streeck (External Senior Fellow, School of Language & Literature): How hands make sense
von 18:30 bis 19:30
|Wo||FRIAS, Albertstr. 19, Seminarraum|
|Name||Dr. Gesa von Essen|
In his presentation Prof. Streeck will investigate what we achieve by gesticulating with our hands in everyday communication and how the hands find and fabricate meaning in relation to the perceptual and situationalcontext at hand. Prof. Streeck does not primarily regard gesture as a form of expression of thought and psychic content, but as a kind of knowledge that is derived from our hands' practical engagements with the world and constituted by the dialogical nature of human beings. He distinguishes different 'ecological' variety of gesture and tonight will briefly discuss different methodical ways of investigating gesture. The presentation will be richly illustrated by video examples from everyday life, most of which show a car mechanic in the course of his daily activities.
