The year 1978 marks an important watershed in the history of the Chinese Communist Party. After the death of former party chairman Mao Zedong, the Party embarked on a reform path that has led to China’s spectacular economic successes in the past three decades. Simultaneously, the party reevaluated its political history, especially the legacy of the Maoist era. However, as yet the question of how victims and perpetrators were dealt with remains largely unclear.
Several million cases and petitions were handled by courts and party committees in order to right previous injustices. This conference is to bring together an international cast of scholars actively involved in researching and documenting Maoist era state crimes and rehabilitation policies. The aim is to discuss new approaches of analyzing
and archiving the Maoist legacy by means of digital technology, as well as ways of connecting different projects through a transnational research platform to be developed at the University of Freiburg.
