Since 1932, Thailand has seen several instances of political violence leading to the death of rebels, soldiers, farmers and students. These events have coined the peoples understanding of rightful political protest and, thus, are important for our understanding of the current political crisis in Thailand. In this lecture I will trace how the dead of political violence were treated. The major events or political violence, such as the Boworadet Rebellion (1933), the Second World War, the October 14 (1973) and October 6 (1976) incidences, the Bloody May (1992) and the crack-down of anti-government protestors in April and May 2010, will be discussed in regards to the arrangements made for the victim’s funerals. Thereby, it will become clear that the funerals are instrumental in creating legitimate protest and in aligning the dead with the heroes or the villains of Thai history. It will further be shown how the power to alignment has shifted to being firmly in the hands of the government into a much more contested commodity.
