Obesity is a global epidemic and a major contributor to some of the leading causes of death in the Western world including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some types of cancer. In this talk I will focus on how research into the causes of obesity have fundamentally changed prevailing views on biology including horizon and vertical transmission of disease. I will briefly outline how our work on skeletal muscle is focussed on developing therapies for the condition.
However the primary intention is to discuss non-laboratory based solutions that we presently have at our disposal, including dietary control and exercise regimes, which could almost immediately halt the obesity epidemic. However for these remedies to be effective they need to be implemented on a national scale and may have to impact individual choice. Some of the ethical issues associated with these measures will be outlined and opened for discussion.
