Prof. Dr. Ilia Polian

Universität Passau
External Senior Fellow
April - Juli 2016

Ilia Polian has a Diplom degree in Computer Science from the University of Freiburg and a further Diplom degree in Economics from the FernUniversität Hagen, both in Germany. He received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Freiburg in 2003 and his Habilitation from the same institution in 2008. From October 1999 to March 2010 he was a researcher at the Chair of Computer Architecture at the University of Freiburg. From April 2010, he has been a Chaired Professor of Computer Engineering at the University of Passau, Germany. Prof. Polian spent several months as a research visitor in Nara Institute of Science and Technology in Japan (in 2005, supported by JSPS) and at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, USA (in 2012, supported by DFG). In Passau, he was Dean of his Faculty from 2013 to 2015 and Vice-Dean prior to that. He conceptualized and introduced the new Mobile and Embedded Systems curriculum, opened the Faculty's Master-level programs to international students; these and further activities led to over 100% increase in student enrollment at the Faculty. Prof. Polian co-authored over 140 publications and received two best paper awards. He is the Vice Speaker of COST Action TRUDEVICE and of the national (VDI/VDE/GI) interest group in test methods and reliability. He was Managing Director of the Freiburg Center for Security and Society in 2009-2010 and is currently serving as the Speaker of the Institute of IT-Security and Security Law (ISL) in Passau. His research interests are design of secure and robust electronic systems, and design and test of circuits in emerging technologies.

Hardware-Sicherheit als Voraussetzung für Digitale Souveränität

The debate about digital sovereignty revolves around existing and alleged threats to security of systems and networks that are difficult to control on national level. The planned research focuses on one recent class of vulnerabilities that target hardware components of state-of-the-art cyberphysical systems. One strand of research targets technical aspects of hardware security. Threats to confidentiality, integrity and authenticity of hardware circuits and data processed by them will be investigated, existing countermeasures will be evaluated and novel solutions will be proposed. The second strand of research will consider interdisciplinary aspects of hardware security. Hardware-related threats are magnified by the extreme complexity of state-of-the-art electronic circuits and by the high degree of global distribution of the value-creation chain which prevents or complicates its effective control. These aspects will be discussed and evaluated in interdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues from FRIAS and from the Center for Security and Society.
