Controlling and Gating Current Flowing through Large Area Metal-molecules-Metal Junctions: from tunneling to hopping mechanisms

By using a junction, Au-SAM//Hg, based on Au and Hg electrodes, molecules of increas-ing complexity organized in self assembled monolayers (SAMs) on a Au surface can be easily contacted by a Hg drop as second electrode. Examples are given to control the current flowing through the junction.
- A new generation of molecular wires, assembled in tuneable lengths by stepwise coor-dination can be (up to 40 nm), show a long sought electrical behaviour which is domi-nated by an ohmic regime.
- By using a semitransparent Au gold surface, SAMs formed by a rigid azobenzene-based compound can be irradiated when trapped inside the junction. The cooperative photoinduced molecular movements generate a system that acts as a light triggered cargo lifter.
