"Open system quantum dynamics: from noisy origins to precise simulation results"

Stochastic Liouville-von Neumann equations (SLN) are a simple, flexible approach to open-system quantum dynamics beyond the well-understood weak-damping/Markovian regime. They are a suitable starting point for both numerical simulation and formal manipulations of open-system dynamics. An overview of different methods based on these equations will be given, and recent performance improvements of SLN-based simulations will be discussed: Spurious fluctuations, which average to zero but increase the variance of numerical samples can now be identified and damped. The previously observed sign problem, an initially slow, but asymptotically exponential rise of sample variances with time, is solved by the new approach.
