FRIAS-Projekt

1) Byzantium in Gunnar Ekelöf and William Butler Yeats
2) Scandinavian Detective Fiction

I intend to work on two projects while at Freiburg. The first is a study of the role and influence of the idea of Byzantium in the 20th century Swedish poet Gunnar Ekelöf and the Irish poet William Butler Yeats. Byzantium and Byzantine imagery play a major role in Ekelöf’s poetry, particularly his final three volumes and Yeats’ similarly uses Byzantium as an ideal and a theme. I have begun this project but want to continue it for a longer project. I have just begun the second project, an attempt to analyze some of the contemporary Scandinavian Detective Fiction writers, especially Stieg Larsson, in light of Foucault’s theories of power. In Discipline and Punish, (Surveiller et Punir) Foucault outlines the history of surveillance and persecution and this analysis fits into his overall study of historical transitions of power. Crime fiction writers tend to focus on the violence within criminal actions and the ways that those violent actions relate directly to a desire for control and dominance.
