CV

After studying in Oxford and Vienna I embarked on a doctorate on medieval German visionary literature and, whilst still working on my doctorate, took up a permanent position as Lecturer in German in Durham (1970). After six years teaching Medieval German Language and Literature in Durham I moved to a post in Oxford, where I was Fellow Oriel College for 14 years, teaching mostly Medieval German Literature. During this period I spent several periods in Germany, in Würzburg (on the basis of connections to Kurt Ruh) and in Berlin (one the basis of connections to Ursula Hennig). I was appointed to the Oxford chair of German Medieval Studies in 1992 and have taught in that capacity ever since. I have encouraged graduate students to work on German manuscripts, Medieval German religious prose, and other related subjects. In my teaching and research I aim to cover the vernacular and Latin literature of the German lands from the beginnings to the early 16th century. I have also developed extensive interests in church history (in particular the Cistercian order), in German palaeography, in early printing, and in particular in medieval blockbook printing and allied media. In recent years I have built up research and publication projects concentrating on the German South-West in the later Middle Ages.

FRIAS-Projekt

The Begerin-Gebetbuch: Edition and Commentary

This project is conceived jointly with Professor Jeffrey Hamburger (Harvard), and we are currently working on an edition of the pictures, and of an extensive cycle of German prayers composed for the Strasbourg convent of Maria Magdalena, and produced over the period ca. 1380-1480. My part of this project is the critical edition of the German text and a wide-ranging commentary, which is planned to be read together with Professor Hamburger’s art-historical commentary. The German prayers of the Begerin-Gebetbuch are a major piece of German writing from the years around 1480, whose interest and significance has not previously been recognized. The project is a component in my broader plans for work in German literature from the South-West in this period, arising out and complementing my work on the book production and literature of the Cistercians in South West Germany.
