CV

I completed my doctoral dissertation at the University of Freiburg in 1990 after studying English, German, and History in Germany, Canada, and the U.S., service in the navy, and years as a journalist. Various positions in North American Studies in Osnabrück, Mannheim, Stuttgart, and Braunschweig eventually brought me back to Freiburg in 2003. Past and current projects include the Civil War in American memory (to be published in 2010/11), Living History as theatrical performance, nineteenth century melodrama, and volunteerism as an integral and constitutive aspect of a republican civil society. I am one of the directors of the Freiburg Centre for Security and Society.

FRIAS-Projekt

Firefighting as Culture: Kulturelle Bedingungen des Einsatzverhaltens von amerikanischen Feuerwehrleuten

Given the prominence of American firefighters and their heroic image in popular culture it must come as a surprise that there is comparatively little actual research in the construction of this image, or its repercussions and effects. There is even less research on the cultural conditions of the performance of American firefighters. My project will try to identify central issues and texts that have been constitutive in the formation of behavioural patterns which continue to contribute to the specific risk culture of firefighting in America. There are certain indications that the hetero- as well as autostereotypical image of the firefighter leads to an increase in the readiness to accept a risk culture that exposes its members to more, and higher degrees of danger than in other, comparable environments.
