Videokonferenz „Politics, Culture and Responsible Scholarships in China Today“

Am Donnerstag, 19. März 2009, ist die FRIAS School of History einem Vortrag des internationalen Netzwerks WUN Contemporary China Center zugeschaltet. Yongjin Zang, Professor of East Asian Studies und Direktor des Centre for East Asien Studies der University of Bristol spricht zum Thema: „Politics, Culture and Responsible Scholarship in China Today “.

Zusammenfassung des Vortrags:

„The relationship between knowledge and power has always been acutely problematic. The role and function of intellectuals and how the intellectual confronts the question of power have been perennially debated. In this lecture, I examine this problematic relationship in the context of flourishing International Relations (IR) scholarship in China. I suggest that the expanding political space and the weakness of critical scholarship in China, combined with a historically induced intellectual predicament and inherited cultural heritage constitute a useful analytical framework for making sense of Chinese understandings of scholarly responsibility. This analytical framework, I also suggest, helps understand the perpetual agony of Chinese intellectuals in coming to terms with the turbulent relations between knowledge and power in China today“.

Der Vortrag gehört zu einer Reihe virtueller Seminare des WUN Contemporary China Centers, die von Prof. Flemming Christiansen, National Institute of Chinese Studies, University of Leeds, und Halima Chen, Departement of East Asien Studies, University of Leeds, organisiert wird.  Alle interessierten Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler der Freiburger Universität sind herzlich eingeladen, im Rahmen dieser Videokonferenz mit China-Experten in der ganzen Welt zu diskutieren.

Am selben Abend um 20.00 Uhr beginnt im FRIAS-Hauptgebäude, Albertstr. 19, die Tagung „The Crisis of Socialist Modernity: China, Soviet Union and Yugoslavia in the 1970s”. Den Eröffnungsvortrag „ The 1970s as a caesura?“ hält Prof. Lutz Niethammer (Jena).
