FRIAS-Projekt

“Die Geburt des Staates aus dem Geist der Metropole: Eine ideengeschichtliche und planungssoziologische Untersuchung der Staatsbildung in Argentinien, Australien und Kanada” (The Birth of the State under the Auspices of the Metropolis: An Analysis of State-building in Argentina, Australia and Canada with a Special Focus on the Intellectual History of Planning)

The historical-comparative project analyzes the process of state-building in Argentina, Canada, and Australia in the period between 1800 and 1940. All three societies developed particular forms of settler-capitalisms and were clearly dominated by one or two metropolises which shaped the fate of the nation (Buenos Aires in the case of Argentina, Toronto and Montreal in the case of Canada, and Sydney and Melbourne in the case of Australia). A special focus of the project is on urban elites and their (oftentimes conflicting) ideas concerning the form of the emerging national society, on their planning-projects in order to organize economic structures and activities, and their efforts to integrate different populations and territories within the framework of the nation-state.
