FRIAS Forschungsprojekt

"Geschichtsbewusstsein und nationale Identitätsbildung im Europa des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts."

Die Geschichte der Geschichtsschreibung ist in den letzten Jahren in mindestens drei Richtungen erneuert worden. Erstens haben die Vergleichs-, Beziehungs- und transnationale Geschichte auf die Kultur- und Ideengeschichte Anwendung gefunden. Zweitens hat die Neuorientierung der Nationalismusforschung seit den frühen 1980er Jahren die Leitfragen der „invention of tradition“ und der Identitätskonstruktion in den Mittelpunkt gerückt. Schließlich haben die Innovationen in der Wissenschaftsgeschichte und der historischen Wissenssoziologie auch die Human- und Geisteswissenschaften befruchtet. Am Kreuzungspunkt dieser Debatten ist das gemeinsame Projekt von Stefan Berger und Christoph Conrad angesiedelt: Ein Buchmanuskript mit dem vorläufigen Arbeitstitel: Historical Consciousness and National Identity Formation in 19th and 20th Century Europe. Dabei handelt es sich um den sechsten und abschließenden Band der Buchreihe Writing the Nation, die von Palgrave MacMillan seit 2008 publiziert wird. Diese Reihe stellt das Hauptresultat des von der European Science Foundation finanzierten Forschungsprogramms „Representations of the Past: The Writing of National Histories in Europe“ (NHIST) dar, das Berger und Conrad zwischen 2003 und 2008 geleitet haben.
